Effect of Charcoal, Probiotic, and Chlorhexidine Mouthwashes on Mechanical Properties and Surface Characterization of Ceramic-Coated Nickel-Titanium Orthodontic Arch Wires: A Comparative In-Vitro Study

Aim and objectives: To determine the impact on mechanical properties surface features of ceramic-coated nickel-titanium (CC-Ni-Ti) archwires when subjected to charcoal, probiotic, chlorhexidine mouthwashes in vitro conditions. Materials methods: Eighty samples 25 mm were cut from posterior end preformed maxillary 0.016’’ CC-Ni-Ti super elastic (Koden Company, USA) distributed into four equal groups. Each group wires was immersed artificial saliva (Wet Mouth Mouthwash, ICPA Health Products Ltd., India) (control), charcoal mouthwash (Hello activated extra freshening mouthwash, Hello LLC, USA), probiotic (Perfora, Probiotic Rinse, India), 0.2% gluconate (Sensorange, Orange Biotech, Pvt., (experimental groups) for 90 min at 37 °C. All taken out their respective solutions washed with distilled water prior testing. A three-point bending test performed 15 each using a universal testing device. During loading unloading archwires, yield strength (YS), flexural modulus elasticity (E), spring back ratio (YS/E) calculated. The remaining five observed under scanning electron microscope (SEM) topography evaluation. Results: mean differences YS, E, YS/E between are 302.91 MPa, 4.28 GPa, 0.0004, whereas values 172.32 4.16 0.0003, respectively, statistical significance <0.001 terms YS E. 305.36 4.54 0.0005, 173.77 3.66 2.45 0.26 0.00007, 1.44 0.49 0.0000533, no >0.001 YS/E. Surface alteration clearly appreciated groups compared mouthwash. Conclusions: Loading 0.016" showed an increase except exposure chlorhexidine, mouthwashes. Chlorhexidine had higher comparison archwires. More corrosive changes seen followed by
